Undertaker jailed three years for having cannabis

A man who was found with a large quantity of cannabis was jailed for three years on Wednesday for drug possession.

Kalaivannan Nagamuthu, 45, was an undertaker at the time of his offences on May 14 last year. He pleaded guilty to two charges.

Central Narcotics Bureau officers arrested him that day at the loading bay carpark in front of Block 255 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. They escorted him to his flat where one block and one packet containing a total of 161.71g of cannabis were found. Another two blocks and a packet with 36.45g of the drug were found in his company van.

Kalaivannan, who is now being treated at a drug centre, was liable for enhanced punishment as he has a conviction for drug possession in 1993 and was fined $2,000. He did not pay the fine and served two months' jail instead.

Two other charges of having cannabis mixture were taken into consideration during his sentencing. He could have been jailed for up to 10 years and/or fined up to $20,000 per charge.
