SINGAPORE - A tree in Balestier fell on Monday evening (Feb 5), crashing on a vehicle with two people inside.
A reader who gave her name only as Ms Chong told The Straits Times that she was giving tuition at her home in Balestier when the mother of the student arrived to fetch her child and told her about it.
"At about 6.15pm, my tuition student's mum told me that a tree fell down just outside at about 6pm," said Ms Chong, who is in her 40s. "It crashed onto the hood of a car but luckily it didn't hit the driver."
The male driver and his female passenger were in shock, she said.
The incident occurred opposite Balestier Market. The Land Transport Authority said on its traffic news Twitter page at 6.46pm that there was an obstacle on Balestier Road, towards Prome Road, after Boon Teck Road.
Ms Chong said the police were called to the scene. She also saw workers cutting off the branches of the fallen tree, which she estimated to be about three storeys high.
They seemed to be about finished with their task at around 7.45pm, she said. ST understands that the tree was cleared by 8.05pm.
"It wasn't raining but it was very windy," said Ms Chong.
The fallen tree caused congestion in the area for up to two hours. LTA tweeted a few times about congestion due to the obstacle, with its latest tweet sent out at 7.54pm.
ST has contacted the police for more information.
