Whenever Ms Chan Jie Yee, 26, takes the train, she feels a sense of pride. As a rail engineer with the Land Transport Authority, she has a part to play in the MRT system.
But the LTA and the two train operators are short of almost 1,000 engineers, and this has had some impact on operations, they say.
Various factors deter Singaporeans from joining the profession - among them, long and late hours and having to get their hands dirty.
In particular, many leave midway for other sectors, such as the high-paying finance industry, which prize them for their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
