Strike shows failure in settlements of labour dispute: Workers' Party

The Workers' Party on Friday weighed in on the strike by SMRT bus drivers, saying it was disappointed that it took such drastic action to surface grievances about their pay and living conditions.

The strike also signalled a failure in the labour dispute settlement process within the transport operator, it said in a statement, adding that strikes should be and were often a measure of last resort by workers who have exhausted all other avenues to persuade management to address their concerns.

It called on SMRT to address the concerns about pay and work hours, and to keep channels of communication between workers and management open. It also noted that it was in Singapore's interests to treat all workers fairly.
