SMRT investigating 6 China bus drivers who failed to report for work

In an update on the SMRT bus drivers' illegal strike, SMRT says that all except six mainland Chinese drivers reported for their morning shift on Wednesday.

It is investigating why the six did not turn up.

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy here says it hopes the bus operator will fully consider whatever reasonable demands made by its drivers, and that both parties can negotiate a consensus.

The embassy said in a statement posted on its website that officials had met the Chinese drivers "to understand the situation and to conduct persuasion",

Embassy officials were spotted at the Woodlands dormitory late on Tuesday, talking to the drivers from about 11pm to 1am.

"We hope they will adhere to local regulations, and convey their demands reasonably through suitable channels, to avoid affecting public travel," the embassy said.
