Is road safety affected by more private-hire vehicles and PMDs on the roads?

More private-hire vehicles and personal mobility devices on the roads; pedestrians and drivers glued to smartphones - some have asked if these recent developments are affecting road safety. Zhaki Abdullah looks at the issues involved.

While taxi numbers have been declining in recent years, they continue to make up a disproportionate number of accidents here.

Figures provided by the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) showed taxis made up 18,414 of the 162,724 accidents reported to insurers last year - or about 11.3 per cent.
