New link for those going to TPE, Seletar West

A new road between Yishun Avenue 6 and Yishun Avenue 1 opens at 11am today, providing an alternative route for motorists travelling to Seletar West Link and Tampines Expressway (TPE).

The new link is called Yishun Avenue 8 and is a 1km two-lane, dual-carriageway road.

There will be two signalised junctions between Yishun Avenue 1 and 8, and between Yishun Avenue 6 and 8, said the Land Transport Authority on its website.

Motorists travelling from Seletar West Link to Yishun Avenue 6, 7 and 9 are advised to keep right after Yishun Avenue 1 to get to the new Yishun Avenue 8.

Directional signs will be placed at affected roads to inform motorists about the changes.

Together with the widened Seletar West Link, which now has three lanes in each direction as compared with just one previously, Yishun Avenue 8 is expected to ease traffic flow in the area.

Traffic congestion in Lentor Avenue is common during the morning and evening peak hours, which can be frustrating for residents who have to go through Lentor to get onto the TPE or CTE (Central Expressway).

"It will only get worse with a new international school and several Build-To-Order (BTO) projects coming," said taxi driver Jeffrey Mok, 70, who is a Yishun resident.

"So at least this new road will help to relieve the congestion by diverting some of the traffic."

Construction of the new road started in the second half of 2012 and was finished earlier than the expected end-of-2015 completion date.

Additional work is being done to expand the interchange of the CTE, TPE and Seletar Expressway with four flyovers.

The flyovers will link the expressways with Seletar West Link and are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
