SINGAPORE - When outdoor activities coach Adel Tan wanted to travel from Punggol to Dairy Farm Road earlier this month, she checked the Grab ride-hailing app and saw that it would cost her about $15 to $20.

The 26-year-old then tried the SG Hitch group, on messaging app Telegram, to check if she could get a cheaper ride.
