SINGAPORE- The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Friday warned travellers of heavy traffic at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints during the festive period between Dec 23 and Jan 4, 2015.

"With security checks, traffic build-up is inevitable, especially when a large number of travellers use the checkpoints at the same time. To avoid a surge of travellers and vehicles seeking clearance at the land checkpoints, travellers are advised to adjust their travel plans if possible," the ICA said.

The ICA advised motorists to check on the traffic situation at both land checkpoints before embarking on their journey. Travellers leaving Singapore by Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoint will be able to know in advance the traffic situation from the Land Transport Authority's Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) installed along the Ayer Rajah Expressway and Bukit Timah Expressway.

The ICA has the following tips for travellers using the checkpoints during the festive period:

- Car-pool when possible.

- Maintain lane discipline at all times if you are driving

- Use the enhanced Immigration Automated Clearance System lanes at the bus halls for immigration clearance if you are eligible to do so

- Ensure you are carrying valid passports before presenting them for immigration clearance at the checkpoints

- Ensure that you do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into or out of Singapore
