The final stretch of the Downtown Line, which runs from north-western Singapore to eastern neighbourhoods via the city, opens today, completing the 42km-long MRT line.

Neighbourhoods that will benefit from the line include Mattar, Tampines West and Ubi.

Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who officially opened the line yesterday, noted that as the train network becomes denser, more stations on different lines will become closer to each other.

Therefore, a review of distance-based fares will look at allowing commuters to avoid paying a second boarding charge when they exit one MRT station and get to another on foot, he said.
