SINGAPORE - Two accidents on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) led to a massive traffic jam on Wednesday morning (July 4).

The first accident occurred right after the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway exit towards Tuas and immediately before an Electronic Road Pricing gantry.

Two taxis and two cars were involved, affecting three lanes.

This caused congestion all the way to Bedok North Road, the Land Transport Authority said in a tweet at 9.15am.

An eyewitness told The Straits Times that shortly after, there was a second collision about 100m away, involving a trailer and a car. This blocked another lane.

Netizens and affected drivers speculated that the first accident might have been caused by a driver braking because he had forgotten to insert a CashCard in the in-vehicle unit.

ST understands that as of 10.20am, the lanes were cleared.

In response to queries, the police said that a 64-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman were conscious when taken by ambulance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Police investigations are ongoing.
