Transport Ministry outreach raises $1 million for Community Chest

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Transport and its statutory boards have raised $1 million for the Community Chest this year, through a charity outreach programme held annually since 2010.

At the SIA Training Centre on Friday (Sept 22), Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan presented a cheque for the funds to Ms Ng Ling Ling, who is assistant chief executive of the National Council of Social Service and managing director of the Community Chest.

As part of the outreach programme this year, 40 beneficiaries from Metta School and APSN Katong School were given a tour around the SIA Training Centre in Upper Changi, and saw the training facilities of pilots and cabin crew.

They saw a demonstration of emergency evacuations and the service training that Singapore Airlines' cabin crew undergo. Some even tried out the Boeing-777 flight simulator.

The statutory boards involved are the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Land Transport Authority, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Public Transport Council.

Ms Ng said: "We are thankful and looking forward to continued partnership with the Ministry of Transport, to make a difference in the lives of those supported by about 80 charities, because it is when everyone and every organisation step up in collaborative efforts that we are able to build a caring and inclusive community."

Mr Khaw added: "We will continue to support Community Chest and hope to help more beneficiaries every year."
