Train services between Simei and Tanah Merah MRT stations have been disrupted as engineers shut down the power to fix a defective third rail, which supplies power to trains.

Operator SMRT said on its Facebook page that it has imposed speed restrictions for passengers' safety while its engineers try to rectify the problem. Free bus services have been provided.

The disruption on Friday comes on the back of several other incidents, which has prompted the operator to overhaul its ageing rail network.

It is also working with the Land Transport Authority to replace its third rail system.
