SINGAPORE - A traffic police (TP) officer was taken to hospital after an accident on the Pan Island-Expressway towards Changi Airport on Wednesday morning (Feb 3).

The TP officer had stopped a lorry for a traffic offence within the chevron markings of a slip road and was conducting checks on its driver when a second lorry collided into the rear of the first one.

The impact caused the stationary lorry to move forward and hit both the officer and the driver, who were standing in front of it.

The accident happened at around 11.30am.

Both the 34-year-old TP officer and the 68-year-old driver of the stationary lorry were conscious when conveyed to Changi General Hospital, said the police in response to queries.

The driver of the second lorry has been arrested for careless driving causing grievous hurt, the police added.

The TP officer, dressed in a black jacket, appears to be part of the TP's Special Operations Team - an elite unit of covert officers that clamp down on road offenders, particularly errant motorcyclists.

A video showing the aftermath of the incident was posted on the Facebook page of road safety community Beh Chia Lor - Singapore Road.

In it, the TP officer and another man can be seen lying unconscious on the road, with blood on their faces.

A man is seen assisting the TP officer and a few others are helping the driver of the stationary lorry lie in a more comfortable position on the side of the road.

A damaged black motorcycle and a lorry with a big dent on its side are also visible.
