Tens of thousands gather to celebrate Singapore's 47th birthday

Tens of thousands of people gathered in the downtown Marina Bay area to mark Singapore's 47th birthday on Thursday.

About 26,000 turned out for this year's National Day Parade, which celebrated national unity and the Singapore Spirit.

The three-act show, themed Loving Singapore, Our Home, also saw an NDP first as all Members of Parliament wore red and white outfits, instead of the People's Action Party white or Workers' Party blue.

Parade VIPs included Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Goh Chok Tong, and President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who marked his first NDP as Head of State on Thursday.
