SINGAPORE - Parking is more than just for cars. For the fifth year, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will be giving carparks a new purpose.
In the biggest PARK(ing) Day event ever, 166 carpark lots in Bugis, Kampong Glam, Little India and Tiong Bahru will be transformed this Saturday (Sept 16) into 85 "parks" - with public activities ranging from music performances to yoga.
They are organised by students, members of the public as well as bike-sharing companies and schools across the island.
Bicycle-sharing companies at car parks at Tan Quee Lan Street and Sultan Gate will provide 95 bicycles for participants to cycle around the area for free.
Students at Bugis and Kampong Glam car parks will create street furniture and art installations, while organising interactive arts activities.
Other activities include games, music performances, cycling challenges and obstacle courses as well as yoga and meditation.
Some "parks" will also offer educational talks on health and wellness as well as platforms to discuss topics of sustainability.
To facilitate the event, Liang Seah Street will be closed to traffic on Saturday from 10am to midnight, while part of Sultan Gate will be closed to traffic from 8am to 9pm.
These are on top of the regular weekend road closures in the precinct at Bali Lane, BaghdadStreet, Bussorah Street and Haji Lane from noon to midnight on Sept 16.
