Stories, peer mentorship used to teach pupils about cyber wellness

Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) (Barker Road) on Monday launched the second run of its Cyber-Wellness Explorer Programme. The programme, which was initially confined to the ACS family of schools, is designed to teach primary school students how to use the Internet responsibly and what to do when faced with cyber bullying among other things.

In total there are 1,400 participants from six primary schools: ACS (Primary), ACS (Junior), Greendale Primary School, Cantonment Primary School, First Toa Payoh Primary School and Kheng Cheng Primary School.

The ACS (Baker) students were asked to write stories relating to these issues. The school picked the best 10 and compiled them into a book. The 13-year-olds then went to primary schools armed with the books to teach Primary 4 and 5 pupils about cyber-wellness

According to Mrs Aw Meng Yin, vice-principal of ACS (Barker Road), the programme began when the school started using laptops during lessons in 2007. "We wanted to teach the boys how to handle their devices responsibly." she said. "Once this was done, however, we felt the need for them to become moral advocators and teach the values they themselves have learnt."
