Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SPH Foundation donated $350,000 to Community Chest yesterday, at an annual charity cheque presentation ceremony.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, presented the cheque to Community Chest vice-chairman Eric Ang in front of 300 guests at the SPH News Centre Auditorium.

They included 100 beneficiaries and caregivers.

Of the $350,000, a $100,000 donation was made to 10 charities serving the elderly and disadvantaged families.

Another $100,000 went to 10 charities serving underprivileged children and the disabled.

For the first time, the SPH foundation also donated $150,000 to the Special Education Financial Assistance Scheme.

The sum will aid more than 1,000 disabled and special-needs students from low-income families.

Guests held a minute's silence before the ceremony began, in memory of the late Mr S R Nathan.

The Singapore Chinese Orchestra performed a repertoire of Chinese classics and folk tunes at the event, as well as a rendition of Amazing Grace in tribute to the former president.

Said Ms Ng Ling Ling, managing director of Community Chest and assistant CEO of the National Council of Social Service: "We are very grateful to SPH and SPH Foundation for their annual donations to Community Chest.

"Community Chest raises funds every year to support programmes that need to keep going, so that the people who are disadvantaged are given the service and intervention."
