Some electricity retailers to stop collecting NRIC data, strengthen checks

Some electricity retailers are tightening their processes for verifying customer information, amid fresh concerns over their data handling and stricter rules governing personal data collection, starting next month.

The issue was brought to the fore when Singapore's consumer watchdog flagged the collection of NRIC information by electricity retailers, and the potential for the data to be misused to sign consumers up for electricity plans without their consent.
