SINGAPORE - Some electricity retailers are tightening the way they verify customer information amid fresh concerns over their handling of data and stricter rules governing personal data collection kicking in next month.
The issue has been brought to the fore with Singapore's consumer watchdog flagging the collection of NRIC information by electricity retailers, and the potential for the misuse of the data to sign consumers up for electricity plans without their consent.
