SINGAPORE - In the light of recent media reports linking an alleged baby trafficking ring to Singapore, the police on July 18 said that they have not received any local police reports nor any information on babies being trafficked into the country from Indonesia.

The police told The Straits Times they are aware of media reports with these allegations.

“The police have contacted the Indonesian authorities to seek relevant information about the allegations and will render necessary assistance to our Indonesian counterparts within the ambit of our laws,” they said.

Indonesian newspaper The Jakarta Post reported on July 18 that the West Java police have arrested 13 people suspected of trafficking dozens of newborn babies to Singapore through an illegal adoption network.

According to the article, the Indonesian authorities said that the syndicate had been operating since 2023, and is believed to have trafficked at least 25 infants, mostly to Singapore. Some were also said to have been sent to various cities across Indonesia.

An AFP report on July 15 said that the case was discovered after a parent reported an alleged baby kidnapping to the police, which led them to a suspect who admitted to trading 24 infants.
