SilkAir is testing a new wireless inflight entertainment system.

The technology currently installed on one of its Airbus 320 aircraft allows passengers to stream content such as movies, television programmes and music directly onto their personal devices including laptops and smartphones. Access is free, the airline said.

Chief executive officer Leslie Thng said: "This initiative was introduced based on feedback from customers who wanted access to more inflight entertainment options on our flights."

If the trial is successful, the system will be introduced across SilkAir's aircraft fleet by next year, he said. The airline which operates regional routes currently provides shared overhead screens for customers that feature short films and documentaries but without audio.
