SINGAPORE – Customers who want to send items with commercial value to the US via Singapore Post must do so using Speedpost Express through the post office from Aug 25.

Only letters – documents with no declared value – can still be sent to the US by normal post.

Singapore Post said in a Facebook post on Aug 19 that the move is to help meet new US regulations.

All items with commercial value shipped to the US, regardless of value, will be subject to new duties and taxes from Aug 29.

Previously, items valued at or under US$800 (S$1,000) were allowed into the US without being subject to duties and taxes.

But an executive order signed on July 30 by US President Donald Trump removes this exemption from Aug 29.

The Speedpost Express option meets the latest US Customs requirements, said SingPost.

If customers drop a US-bound shipment containing items with commercial value into the posting box, the items will be returned to senders, said SingPost.

For items without a return address, a retrieval fee of $20, subject to prevailing GST, will be imposed upon request for retrieval and return, SingPost added.
