Individuals caught setting off "improvised explosive devices" can be prosecuted in court, said the police in an advisory released on Wednesday.

These devices, constructed using sparklers, are a potential fire hazard and could cause injury to individuals and damage of property, the release added.

While the sale of certain types of sparklers are legal in Singapore, police said the use of sparklers should be done responsibly and users should follow the safety guidelines listed by the manufacturer.

If convicted for negligent conduct with respect to fire, combustible matter or explosive substances, offenders could be imprisoned for up to a year, fined up to $5,000 or both.
