To mark Father's Day today, Second-Lieutenant (2LT) Ahmad Hafizuddin Abdul Hamid, 21, is dedicating his Sword of Honour to his father, auditor Abdul Hamid Abdullah, 62.

The award is given only to the top cadets commissioned as Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers. 2LT Ahmad Hafizuddin was one of the 475 officers commissioned yesterday at the Safti Military Institute in Upper Jurong Road.

He said: "My father was an officer when he served his national service and he advised me to always do my best. His words inspired me. There were times when I encountered obstacles during my training at the Officer Cadet School (OCS). His words pushed me to try even harder and strive for the best."

The commissioning parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the OCS.

More than 300 of theofficers came from the army, with 37 from the navy and 69 from the air force.

Addressing the cadets yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the commissioning affirms Singapore's trust and confidence in them.

"The SAF has enabled Singapore to contribute to international efforts against violent extremism."

He added that the terror threat to Singapore is at its highest level in recent years. "The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has already plotted to carry out two attacks against Singapore that the authorities are aware of. The first plot to attack Singapore in the first half of 2016 was swiftly foiled by our authorities.

"The second plot to launch a rocket attack against the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort was discovered and stopped by Indonesian authorities just last year."

DPM Tharman said that the SAF regularly conducts bilateral and multilateral exercises with foreign military partners, to share professional knowledge, enhance practical cooperation and jointly tackle transnational challenges.

He added: "Such interactions have enabled the SAF to benchmark itself against professional militaries around the world.

"Other militaries speak highly of the SAF as a ready and reliable partner, and have praised the professionalism of our servicemen."
