Rice and all things nice for the underprivileged

Nearly 80 volunteers turned up at Wisma Mendaki yesterday to pack hampers for 600 underprivileged families. The helpers were from St Andrew's Adult Autism Services Day Activity Centre and the Land Transport Authority.

The hampers, which contain food items such as Milo and cereal as well as a $50 FairPrice voucher, will be distributed this Saturday and next Saturday. They are given as part of Mendaki's annual Project Joy, which usually helps disadvantaged Malay-Muslims. But this year, 100 families from other races and religions will be included for the first time, in celebration of Singapore's 50th birthday.
