Photographs taken by residents of the Marine Parade Cluster constituencies are on display Saturday and Sunday at Katong I12 Shopping Mall atrium, in an exhibition themed "People. Places. Memories."
The 200 photos were shortlisted from 2,500 submissions taken around Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency, and Mountbatten and Potong Pasir Single Member Constituencies. Around 500 residents were brought on photo walks from Sep 14 to Oct 19, and some were loaned cameras and given coaching on how to use DSLRs.
Photography enthusiast Jeffrey Cheong, who lives in the Marine Parade cluster, and popular smartphone photographer Mr Chia Aik Beng initiated the programme. They were supported by the Citizens' Consultative Committees (CCCs) and volunteers. "Singaporeans love photography. They share photos of food, children and places they live in," Mr Cheong said in a media release. "I thought it might be a good idea to put a decent DSLR camera into the hands of first-time photographers and let them capture the things they like about their community."
Photos taken by Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Grassroots Adviser to Marine Parade GRC Grassroots Organisations, are also in the exhibition. At the launch of the exhibition on Saturday evening, Mr Tan presented prizes to the top photographers from each of the seven constituencies. Photography demonstrations and workshops will be held at the event on Sunday.
