Fuelled by a spike in bets during the 2018 World Cup, a record $8.1 billion was wagered on lotteries and sports betting in the financial year that ended in March last year, according to the Tote Board.

This represents an increase of almost 10 per cent when compared with the $7.4 billion spent on the same games during the preceding financial year.
