The public prosecutor cannot ignore public opinion but also cannot allow it to drive prosecutorial decisions, which have to be based on the evidence of a case, said former chief prosecutor Mavis Chionh.

In an interview published this month in a law journal, giving rare insight into a prosecutor's mind, the judicial commissioner stressed that public opinion and public interest issues cannot be ignored, but decisions also cannot be populist.
