In order to accommodate its working mothers, the Housing Development Board (HDB) has lactation rooms in its offices to allow them to continue breastfeeding even when they have returned to work.
HDB, along with 11 other companies, was recognised on Wednesday for pro-family initiatives like these at the inaugural 'Best Companies for Mums' contest, co-organised by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Women's Development Secretariat (WDS) and the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP).
The competition highlights outstanding companies who have taken the extra step to provide for work-life balance for their employees, especially those with young families. It was launched in March this year during the NTUC WDS' International Women's Day celebration.
Working mothers were asked to nominate their employers and supervisors whom they felt had facilitated their need to balance work and family. The companies nominated were then evaluated based on criteria such as the extent of flexible work arrangement practices, variety of pro-family employee leave schemes and infrastructural support. By highlighting such initiatives, the organisers hope to encourage other companies to adopt similar practices in the future
