The police arrested two men on Monday afternoon, aged 43 and 59, for allegedly operating and gaming in an illegal gambling den in a private house in Geylang.

In a media statement on Tuesday, the police said preliminary investigations revealed that the 59-year suspect had rented the unit for the purpose of gambling,while the other suspect is believed to be a patron. Twenty-one modified computers and more than $1,000 worth of cash were seized.

The statement also reminded home owners that they have a responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for illegal activities. Those who allow their residential units to be used for unlawful activities can expect to be taken to task, the police warned.

Anyone convicted of managing a place to be used as a Common Gaming House faces a fine of between $5,000 and $50,000, and up to three years in jail. As for the participants, anyone convicted of an offence of gaming in a Common Gaming House faces a maximum fine of $5,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
