President Tony Tan sends condolence letter to Afghanistan over Kabul bomb blast

SINGAPORE -President Tony Tan Keng Yam has sent his condolences to Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani for the Kabul attack that killed at least 90 people.

Dr Tan said he was shocked by the "vicious bomb attack" on May 31.

"Singapore condemns this terrible act, coming so soon after the start of the holy month of Ramadan," he wrote in the letter dated June 1.

"I am confident that the Afghan people will not waver in the face of this tragedy."

Dr Tan offered his sympathies to the victims and bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Afghanistan during this time of sorrow," he said.

No group has so far claimed Wednesday's (May 31) attack, launched from a sewage tanker packed with explosives.

It tore a massive crater in the ground and killed at least 90 people, mainly civilians, while wounding hundreds, AFP said.

I was shocked by the vicious bomb attack in Kabul on 31 May 2017, which took many innocent lives and left hundreds of ordinary Afghan citizens and foreigners injured.

Singapore condemns this terrible act, coming so soon after the start of the holy month of Ramadan. I am confident that the Afghan people will not waver in the face of this tragedy.

On behalf of the people of Singapore, I offer my deepest sympathies to the victims and bereaved families of this attack. We wish those injured a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Afghanistan during this time of sorrow.
