SINGAPORE - Can't get enough of Japanese singer Piko-Taro's viral ditty? You're not alone - Singaporeans have been going ga-ga over Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen (PPAP) since its debut in September.

The surprise hit, which in October set a world record for the shortest song (at one minute and two seconds) to make the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, was officially the top trending YouTube video in Singapore this year.

It has garnered over 177 million views, with Piko-Taro - whose real name is Kosaka Daimaou - releasing an extended version of the song and making an appearance at the Anime Festival Asia in Singapore on Nov 27.

Also captivating Singaporeans on YouTube was the 2016 National Day Parade theme song Tomorrow's Here Today, an upbeat pop anthem that called for Singaporeans to ponder about the country's future.

Uploaded onto The Straits Times' YouTube account on June 19, the music video featuring local band 53A has racked up more than 950,000 views.

Local crooner Nathan Hartono's journey to the final of Sing! China has been well-documented, and his July 15 debut performance in the blind auditions - with over 4.5 million views - remains the most well received.

His R&B-inflected rendition of You Mei You (Have You Ever?) impressed all four superstar judges, with Mandopop king Jay Chou ending up as his mentor.

Content produced by local YouTube creators also made their mark: Night Owl Cinematics' comedic videos Why Young People Hate Chinese New Year! and Boys Vs Men, along with popular YouTuber Tan Jian Hao's 8 Types of Pokemon Go Players in Singapore, all made the top 10 list.

The Singapore rankings were released by YouTube on Thursday (Dec 8) morning.

In its press release, YouTube also said the platform remains Singaporeans' top video entertainment hub, with watch time in Singapore growing by 35 per cent over the past year.
