Polling for Punggol East by-election begins

Punggol East residents began voting for their Member of Parliament at 8am Saturday.

At Block 116D Rivervale Drive, a queue of voters started forming at 7.45am. By 7.59am, the line had stretched to nearly 50 people.

One of the first to cast his vote there was Mr Sim Mong Guan, 53, a maintenance worker.

Mr Sim said he had arrived early to vote as he needed to go to work after that.

"I voted because I'm a Singapore citizen. I feel lucky to be able to vote; voting is good and fair for the citizens," he said.

There are 31,649 registered voters in Punggol East.

The four candidates are the People's Action Party's Dr Koh Poh Koon, Ms Lee Li Lian from the Workers' Party, Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam from the Reform Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance's Mr Desmond Lim.

Polls will close at 8pm Saturday.
