Police corporal charged with cheating two people

A policeman was charged on Monday with cheating two victims of $150 each by making them believe he could settle a case of criminal misappropriation of property against their family members.

Shawn Lim Zi Han, 21, a corporal, allegedly deceived the cousin of a teen that he was able to settle with the police the criminal misppropriation case committed by the girl on Aug 6 last year at City Vibe at Commonwealth Avenue West. He induced the victim to deliver $150 to him.

The alleged offence took place at Clementi Neighbourhood Police Centre on Aug 20 last year.

Two days later, he allegedly cheated the mother of the second teen of $150.

Lim's counsel, Mr Louis Joseph, asked that the case be adjourned for four weeks.

Responding to queries from the media, a Public Affairs Department spokesman said: "Officers of the Singapore Police Force(SPF) are expected to uphold high standards of discipline and integrity from the moment they join the Force. As law enforcers, SPF officers are expected to abide by the law, and set a good example. Officers who commit offences can expect to be charged in Court and be dealt with in accordance to the law.''

Lim is on $10,000 bail. The case will be mentioned on Sept 30. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to seven years and fined on each charge.
