Police commend four members of public for helping to nab suspected armed robber

Four men who helped apprehend a suspected armed robber along St Michael's Road afternoon were commended on Thursday for their selflessness by Acting Commander of Central Police Division, Superintendant of Police Tan Kuan-Wei.

Mr Kong Chun Yuen, 56, Mr Kong Ngai Kiong, 54, and Mr Veluchamy Seshakumar, 39, were on board a bus on Wednesday when they saw the suspect snatch something from Mrs Anusha Moorthy, 30. The three men alighted from the bus and gave chase, and were later joined by Mr Somasunthram Niranjan, 48.

Mr Kong Chun Yuen and Mr Seshakumar were able to pin the robber to the ground after a struggle and cause him to release the knife. Mr Niranjan called the police.

The police arrived within five minutes and arrested the 52-year-old suspect. If convicted, he may be jailed up to 10 years and may face caning of at least 12 strokes for armed robbery.
