A 40-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, on suspicions of committing a snatch theft offence in Sengkang East Way last month.
The man is suspected of following a 49-year-old woman around midnight on Dec 7, before snatching her gold chain and grocery bag. After she cried and put up a struggle, the suspect gave up, and only made away with the grocery bag. The victim lodged a police report two days later.
Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division followed up on the case immediately, the police said in a statement. It added: "Despite the initial lack of leads, the officers' intensive probes and analyses uncovered a crucial lead which led to the identification of the suspect on 7 January 2014."
The suspect was tracked down and arrested at Jurong East Street 21 at 6pm on Tuesday. If convicted of snatch theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code Chapter 224, the man faces a maximum of seven years in jail and shall be liable for caning.
The Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division Headquarters, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police Keok Tong San, advised residents to be calm and composed when confronted with such situations and to also alert the police promptly.
AC Keok also stressed that the police will not hesitate to track down those inclined to commit such confrontational offences and deal with them severely.
