The Government is seeking public feedback on how the new personal data protection law can be applied in specific instances.

The law came into effect on Jan 2, but it will not be enforced until 2014 as details on its interpretation have yet to be determined. This will also give companies time to adjust and comply with the law.

In a consultation paper launched on Tuesday, Singapore's newly-installed Personal Data Protection Commission said it wants to know the public's views on various issues. Among them is whether it's all right for companies to collect personal data from a 14-year-old without the need for parental consent.

Another area covered by the paper is allowing organisations - banks or shopping malls - to charge consumers a "minimal" fee when consumers ask for access to or amendments of their personal data, including CCTV images.

The consultation on PDPC's website closes on March 19.
