Parliament to discuss recent spate of oil spills

A series of oil spills this year will be among the issues raised in Parliament tomorrow, ahead of the Budget statement by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Nominated MP Faizah Jamal is asking Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew what steps the Maritime Port Authority takes to bring parties responsible for oil spills in Singapore waters to task, and if reports of actions taken against these parties can be scrutinised by the public.

There have been three vessel collisions that resulted in oil spills off Singapore since Jan 29. The most recent case occurred on Monday last week, with some 80 metric tonnes of bunker fuel poured into the Singapore Strait off Sebarok Island as a result.

Other questions tabled by MPs include one by Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Zainal Sapari on minimising the inconvenience of 24-hour coffeeshops, and another by Ms Faizah on monkey-trapping activities.
