SINGAPORE – Despite having two older kids who have gone through primary school, my youngest child’s Primary 1 journey got off to a rocky start.

I had mistakenly presumed that there would be a buddy – an older student – to guide her to buy food on the first day, and decided not to pack a sandwich for her so that she would learn to queue for food in the canteen.
