SINGAPORE - An oil painting of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew was auctioned for half a million dollars at the Love from the Stars gala on Sunday.
There were two paintings of Mr Lee by Tianjin artist Ren Zhenyu at the auction, Lianhe Zaobao reported. The $500,000 work was of an older Mr Lee, while the portrait of a young Mr Lee went for $300,000.
The buyer of the painting wished to remain anonymous and declined to be interviewed.
The Love From The Stars event saw celebrities such as Jackie Chan and Eric Tseng from Hong Kong,and Taiwan's Jonathan Lee and Wakin Chau, taking the stage to raise funds for local charities.
The gala at Resorts World Sentosa raised more than $6.2 million. President Tony Tan Keng Yam graced the event as guest of honour, with his wife Mary. Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was among the 2,600 who attended the event.
The proceeds will go to six charities: All Saints Home, Sian Chay Medical Institution, Singapore Power Heartware Fund, the Singapore University of Technology and Design's Scholarship Programme, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities and the Viva Foundation for Children with Cancer.
