With the start of Primary 1 registration around the corner, the Straits Times' Senior Education Correspondent Sandra Davie is answering questions parents may have about the process.

Here are some questions from parents about the registration process for new primary schools.

Questions:

"I am going to apply for a place under Phase 2C in Northoaks Primary for my girl. Can I assume that since Northoaks is a new school it will not have Phases 1, 2A and 2B? And does the school start its registration of Phase 2C on 30 July?"

"Can I verify if it's Phase 2C direct for those registering for Alexandra Primary since it is a new school?"

Answer: The three new schools - Northoaks Primary in Sembawang, Alexandra Primary in Bukit Merah, and West Spring Primary in Bukit Panjang - will start registration in Phase 2B where community leaders get priority. They will each offer up to 210 places.

Northoaks Primary will hold its registration at Endeavour Primary School at 10, Admiralty Link; Alexandra Primary at Zhangde Primary School in 51, Jalan Membina; and West Spring will hold its exercise at Beacon Primary School at 36 Bukit Panjang Ring Road.

Phase 2B will be held on July 22 while the subsequent Phase 2C will be held from July 30 to Aug 1. The Education Ministry has said that facilities in these schools will include dance and performing arts studios and outdoor jogging paths, intended to help students in academic and non-academic areas.

Madam Jacinta Phan, principal designate of West Spring has said that she intends to implement a play-based learning approach involving exploration and independent learning while principal designate of Northoaks Primary Madam Theresa Ng has said that the school will focus on character building.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Primary will include environmental education in its curriculum. Headed by principal designate Lim Bee Lay, the school will boast a green roof and solar panels.
