Singapore's largest online donation portal, SG Gives, saw a record year in 2012 in terms of donations with $8.5 million raised for charity. This was a 37 per cent increase compred to 2011's $6.2 million despite slower economic growth. Some charities received 10 times more donations last year compared to the year before.
Since its launch in February 2010, the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre-run SG Gives has raised almost $19 million for charities. Over 270 charities across various sectors are registered with SG Gives. Social services received over 55 per cent of the donations on SG Gives for 2012.
December continues to be the biggest month for giving, with $3.2 million donated in that month last year alone, a rise from December 2011's $2.3 million. Almost $400,000 was raised on Dec 31, 2012 as well.
