SINGAPORE - The Singapore Government said on Saturday (Sept 12) that it had not received any report of Singaporean casualties in the crane crash at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
It also expressed its condolences to Saudi Arabia and families of the victims.
At least 107 people were killed and 238 others injured when a construction crane crashed into the Grand Mosque on Friday (Sept 11), according to media reports.
"Our Muis representatives in Makkah (Mecca) have confirmed that the Singapore pilgrims under their charge are safe. As of now, there are no reports of any Singaporean casualties,'' the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement.
"MFA will continue to keep in close contact with Singaporeans in the Kingdom and monitor developments closely," it said.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic accident in the Grand Mosque... We would like to convey our deepest condolences to the people of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government and the families of the victims."
