SINGAPORE - Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen will host his Chinese counterpart alongside Defence Ministers from Asean next week, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 3).

Chinese Minister of National Defence General Chang Wanquan will be in Singapore for his introductory visit from Sunday (Feb 4) to Thursday.

Dr Ng will be hosting the ministers on the sidelines of the Singapore Airshow 2018. The biennial show is held by Experia Events.

Asean Defence Ministers and Asean's Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi will be in Singapore to attend the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Retreat on Monday and Tuesday.

Singapore will be chairing the ADMM for the second time some 12 years after it was first established.

The ADMM consists of the 10 Asean countries. Singapore also chairs the ADMM-Plus, which was formed in 2010 and comprises the 10 Asean countries plus eight others: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States.

Dr Ng had told the media in October last year that Singapore was taking on chairmanship of ADMM with a focus on three thrusts. Chief among these was pushing regional efforts to combat emerging threats from violent extremism.

The formal ADMM and the ADMM-Plus meetings will be held in October.

Singapore also holds the position of Asean-China Country Coordinator from 2015 to 2018.

Correction note: An earlier version of this story said that the show is an annual one held by the Republic Of Singapore Air Force. It is a biennial show held by Experia Events. We are sorry for the error.
