New rules for escalator safety

Escalator maintenance will have to be done at least once a month and it must meet 10 specified outcomes, as part of new regulations to beef up safety of escalators here.

The regulations, which follow similar rules for lifts, were announced yesterday by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

BCA chief executive John Keung said that while there has not been many escalator accidents in Singapore, it has noted accidents abroad.
