New plan to beef up aftercare industry for ex-offenders in the works

The umbrella body that helps former offenders, plans to introduce for the first time, a training and development framework for the aftercare industry here.

Speaking at the inaugural workplan seminar of the Community Action for the Rehabilitation of Ex-offenders (Care) network on Wednesday, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said the proposed framework will equip volunteers with relevant skills, qualifications and attitudes required to work in the sector.

The framework, expected to be finalised by the end of 2013, will cater to challenges like complex reintegration needs of ex-offenders, and a diverse profile of inmates. It should also help make the transition from jail to society seamless.

Currently, aftercare professionals and volunteers from various organisations such as the Singapore After-Care Association and the Hindu Centre conduct their own training programmes.
