More public places will go smoke-free from Jan 15. This includes the common areas of all residential buildings, covered linkways and walkways, overhead pedestrian bridges, outdoor compounds of hospitals and areas within a five-metre radius of bus shelters.

To allow smokers time to adjust to the extension, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will issue warnings to those caught smoking in these new areas in the first three months of its implementation.

Smokers who repeatedly flout the law despite the warnings given can be fined up to $1,000.

NEA will put up educational posters at bus stops across the island. The new smoke-free areas will also have dustbins that do not come with ashtrays. At bus stops, bins with ashtrays will be moved five metres away.
