A mysterious surge in the number of fires along a stretch of the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) in 2019 had puzzled the authorities, who spent two years getting to the literal root of the problem.

Of 213 road divider vegetation fires that year, 51 per cent were along the 6.5km stretch between the Eng Neo Avenue and Central Expressway exits of the PIE.
