More train trips on Sengkang and Punggol East LRT lines

Residents of Sengkang and Punggol East can look forward to more train trips on the two LRT lines as transport operator SBS Transit will add more trains and run them at shorter intervals to better cater to a growing ridership.

SBS Transit said on Wednesday that it will add 1,464 more weekly trips to the Punggol East and Sengkang LRT systems.

A total of 1,019 trips will be added to the Punggol East LRT on weekdays and weekends, increasing capacity by about 37.1 per cent. This will also reduce waiting times in the morning rush hour and evenings to between two and three minutes.

On the Sengkang East LRT, there will be 445 or 7.3 per cent more trips a week. Commuters can expect more frequent services and less crowded trains when travelling between the morning rush hour (6am and 9.30am) and at between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. The move to boost frequency comes amid increasing daily ridership on both lines. As at April 2013, daily ridership rose by 12 per cent to 27,000 on the Punggol East LRT system and 11.7 per cent to over 52,000 on the Sengkang line.
